Side by side whirlpool freezer was thawed, now it is refreezing

For several months, I've noticed that every once in a while the ice would hang up in the dispenser. When you open freezer to see whats wrong it would have frost built up on the opening hingering the ice from dispensing, possibly because the flap could not open. I I figured it was because the freezer needed a good cleaning out. I would clean off the frost, clear the ice jam and things would work again for few weeks. Then couple days ago I saw some water dripping in the freezer. I thought one of the kids and left the door slighly ajar and it had started the ice in the ice maker dripping. Next time I checked it seemed fine. This morning when i got up, the food was cool but not cold in the fridge. The new gallon of milk wasnt ruined but it had that too warm taste that milk gets from setting out too long and that makes me think it wasnt cooling properly in the last couple of days. All food in the freezer was cold but completely thawed.Ice cubes were not melted/gone but it was stuck together into one giant clump, so i know it was melting.
I foolishly felt a rush of panic and banged on side of fridge. ( I guess thinking it was gonna start the compressor up)? Anyways when I got my brain back, I listened and the fridge sounded like it was running. I pulled it out took off the cardboard in back and cleaned the horrible amount of dust under the fridge, on the coils in front and everything I could reach or clean in the back. The fan is spinning fast. After reading on here< i unplugged and pulled off that "box" thing plugged into side of compressor and shook it. I didnt hear any great rattling, maybe a tiny tiny clicky noise? Did not look or smell burnt. Put everything back together, plugged up fridge, everything in freezer is refreezing(was 15 degrees last time i checked) but fridge is not getting colder than 48 degrees. Granted I have not replaced the cardboard on back of fridge (not sure how much it matters), also compressor is so hot I cant hold my hand on it longer than 1 or 2 sec. Its an embraco brand. Fridge is almost 8yrs old. Of course I dont want to deal with this during the holidays, not to mention cost, but I've guess ive got to. Advice?
