Kenmore 110 model timer does not turn for wash cycle

So I have a Kenmore 110 model washer that had a bad water inlet valve and I ordered a replacement for it. I ran a cycle with the washer and everything worked fine except it wasnt balanced well and during the rinse and spin cycle it shook the body off the frame. I have since secured the body to the frame and in the process of doing so I had to flip the washer onto its top. When flipping it back over to right side up I noticed a couple of brass cotter pins one was on the ground and the other was lying on a part of the frame up inside. I am not sure where these are supposed to go, so that would be the first issue. Secondly now when I turn it on for a wash cycle the timer just sits at the start and never continues on. The tub just continues to fill and will over flow. I can manually turn the timer and it will work when turned enough for it to agitate but the timer still does not move. Now if I move the timer to the rinse cycle it will finish out the cycle without issue meaning it will rinse and spin the load and the timer works like it should. I'm kind of confused as to why the timer works only during certain parts of the cycle. Also it does not matter which type of wash I choose it behaves the same way with them all. Any help would be much appreciated, I am trying to get this working for a single mom with 3 kids who has a real need for this washer. Thanks.
