Stop and Start often during agitation and spin cycle

Good evening. I have an issue with my Kenmore that has me scratching my head. Upon google searching and this forum, I find several like cases but none that are spot on with what I am seeing. There was no known issue leading up to this concern when it happened yesterday (and still occurs). The washer fills properly but once the washer starts the agitation state, the washer runs for about 5-10 seconds and then shuts off for about half a minute average. This cycling continue on until and through the spin cycle. End result are soapy clothes with water left in the tank because the timer continues to tick tick tick away. You do not hear anything but the timer when the washer is in its stop cycle (problem occurring). When it does agitate and/or perform spinning, I do not notice any unusual noises that stick out to me. This washer is a bit old (it was here when we bought the house in 2004) so my best bet seems to just go get another one. However, I figured to run this by a few experts here to see if its something that should be fixed instead. Thank you for taking the time to read!
