Water leaking into refrigerator from freezer above, no icemaker.

That was about ten days ago. After finding water laying on the top refrigerator shelf, we emptied the freezer, removed the freezer floor and evaporator cover and found thick ice under the floor, in the drain pan and clogging the drain tube. The evaporator was free of frost. We removed the ice and with much difficulty, unclogged the drain tube, then reassembled and returned to service.

The freezer control knob is set to 1 (1-7, 7=coldest) and the fridge knob is 6. The freezer doesn't get much warmer than -10 and the fridge runs about 34.

A few days ago, I dropped the control box cover and manually moved the damper back and forth.

We haven't had water drip again but I expect the problem to return based upon the uncontrollable freezer temp.

The evaporator fan runs so I suspect the problem is caused by the freezer control assembly. How can I test it's operation? How does it work?

Thanks
