Defrost thermostat - frosting of coils

Not sure the age of my fridge but it is a GE Profile - model PBA18KBMAR... I have been dealing with defrost issues and have ran several diagnostics. The issue is frosting up of coils and heater not being turned on by thermostat. I had determined that my defrost thermostat was bad by bypassing it (i.e. jumping wires straight from defrost control to heater) and the heater worked, coming on every 14 hours or so and doing a wonderful job of melting the ice/frost build up. so naturally I purchased a brand new thermostat from sears and installed it. Have been waiting a week but for some reason it the ciruit is not closing. When it goes into defrost mode (either by regular course or when I force it into that mode) nothing happens. As a result I contacted Sears and they have said that it is fine...not a dud. I can not for the life of me think of what could be wrong, since it is abundantly clear (after several verifications) that the defrost control and heater are functioning and that the only issue is getting the circuit to be continuous. I am thinking that I should just buy another thermostat but I want to be sure that something else could be wrong.

Any help or ideas would be fantastic.
