Hi All,
I'm a newbie here, looking for some help with my 1987 Sub-Zero Model 550 (freezer on bottom, fridge on top) that is doing two things with respect to the freezer:
1) Ice had been building up along the right-hand rail that the drawer rolls out on; interestingly, it did the same thing last winter as well, but I turned the unit off to let it completely defrost, and also cleaned off the condenser, turned it back on, and it didn't do it again until this week. I have had the freezer dial set at "3" and a thermometer inside the drawer that always has read between 0 and 10 degrees.
2) Several days ago, when I returned from work, I heard an intermittent "clinking" noise coming from the freezer's compressor (or its front-mounted relay...not sure)...the left one on top of the unit, behind the grill ...and the temperature was reading 15 to 20 degrees.
3) Since I was going away for a few days (Christmas break), I turned off the freezer unit via the dial inside the refrigerator compartment.
4) Upon returning and dialing up the freezer again...I heard the timer start ticking again, and then a single "clink" from the compressor area...and then nothing, and it repeated this every 10 seconds or so; I turned the dial back to "Off" since I'm guessing there is a problem and I didn't want to exacerbate it.
Am I correct in thinking that either the compressor or it's relay is the issue...but was wondering if the ice build-up was connected?
I "inherited" this Sub-Zero...I couldn't afford to buy one myself ;--(...and live over 60 steps up from the road, so getting it hauled away would be a real job...so, I'm hoping I can repair this unit, without taking it out...and I'd like to try to do what I can myself if possible.
Am I crazy to try to keep this 25 year old "youngster" running? Any/all help greatly appreciated!
With thanks in advance,
Peter
