Refridg. outside hot to the touch! How do I check the fan?

So, my Whirlpool ET22DKXAW02 is hot to the touch on the body of the fridge. I cleaned the coils...but I suspect the fan is not operating. Before I order a new part, how do I check this out for sure? There is an electrical coupling that goes to the fan... how do I know it's the fan and not a lack of current. I can fix most anything, but am terrible with electricity. I have a meter, I have a test lamp (110v). For the time being, I put a small desk fan in back of the fridge to supply a flow of air...
