This SxS was bought in January of this year. It's freezer compartment is adequately cold but the fresh-food compartment is at about room temperature. The evaporator fan is working fine, and if the freezer door is open cold air pours into the fresh-food compartment from the air outlet at its top rear left just as it should, but as soon as the freezer door closes, the flow stops, which of course is why the ffc is not cooling. This led me to conclude that the air return from the ffc to the freezer must be blocked, and sure enough, when I found the opening to it, which is on the left side wall of the ffc just above the top bin, it was clogged with frost and ice. I should mention that there was frost on the ceiling of the freezer just behind the door, and the door gaskets look fine.
My questions are:
1. Have you heard of this problem with this model?
2. What could have caused the frost buildup in the air return?
3. How do you clean out the air return and is it worth doing, or is this a design problem that will recur? I'm guessing that the other end of the air return is behind the interior back wall of the freezer compartment. Is that true?
