Side-by-side cold on bottom, warm on top

We discovered this problem last night (both freezer and fridge are cold on bottom, but warm on top), so we pulled out the fridge, vacuumed the back to get all of the lint and dust out of it. We then cleaned the food out of the freezer, opened the back panel and found that it was completely iced over. We chipped and melted all of the ice and decided to leave it overnight to see what would happen (hoping the freezer would magically fix itself).

Morning is here and nothing has changed. The freezer is beginning to freeze the coils (only the top 1/3 to 1/2 are freezing over), but the top half of both freezer and fridge are still warm.

After clearing the ice last night and plugging the fridge back in, we could hear the freezer start to make noise, but we didn't see or hear the fan kick on. We watched and listened for only a couple of minutes before deciding it was bedtime.

I've read many similar posts, but I can't figure out if it's the fan, the compressor, the defrost control panel, or something completely different. I'd love to take care of this myself and save the cost of a repair guy.

Thanks for any help/advice you can provide.

Dave
