whirlpool refrigerator filter question

We have a whirlpool ed5fhexns00 fridge. We noticed that our ice has a lot of particles in it when it melts in our glasses. Our replace filter light is showing red inside the fridge. i just wanted to confirm that if i replace the filter for the fridge, that it also filters water going to the ice maker as well? Or does it only filter water coming out of the fridge water dispenser?
