3E code on Maytag Neptune MAH9700A

3E code on Maytag Neptune washer MAH9700A. I get the 3E code in the middle of a wash cycle. If I press the start button it will get going again, and sometimes finishes OK, and sometimes quits again in a few minutes. I checked the motor coils and the resistance is good, and the control board has no apparent problems. When I read the codes in diagnostics mode, I get lots of 2E codes and a single 25 code. I have witnessed the drum straining to start, but not getting going, when the code appears, and the unit seems to shutter a bit when the motor starts in the middle of a cycle (smooth at start of cycle).

I'm thinking it's the motor (vice control module), but before I drop several hundred bucks, I was hoping for a second opinion.
