Mother board compressor question

The Refrigerator's temp rose yesterday with the pump/airflow strong and today it quit cooling altogether. The repairman says it is a mother board however it could possibly be a compressor, too. He can't check the compressor till he has a new board. Once the new board goes in, I own it if I decide not to proceed with a new board and buy a compressor ($950 combined.) He also says that this inability to check the compressor first is not the biggest problem with GE fridges. Says that putting the board so close to the compressor causes heat which cooks the board prematurely.

My wife loves the GE layout and wants to buy a new one but if their is an engineering SNAFU with GEs and not with Fridgeadaire, Whirlpool, etc I will look elsewhere. Need help fast. I have no reefer.
