Greetings and happy holidays,
Long time lurker, first time poster. I have an old 110.86863100 electric dryer. It's one with the brown, user facing bezel and ugly brown knob, and probably 20+ years old. The depth on this dryer is perfect for my small space at 25.5". Have all the dryer manufacturers completely forgotten about 25.5" depth units? I would buy a new one and send this old gal to the crusher, but the new units available at 25.5 depth are garbage quality and cost $400 to $600.
So my problem is that the timer appears to have died. The symptoms were that it wouldn't move for any of the settings, but everything else worked fine. I could still dry the clothes with no problems, just no timer either. So I just set a timer on my cell phone and managed until I could get a used timer from ebay.
So I got the timer from ebay and slapped it in. It worked for about two weeks, then exactly the same symptoms. Everything else works fine, timer not doing anything at all. Crap, I figured I got one on ebay that's been sitting around for a while and conked out, let's try another. I try it again - timer works again for about two weeks, and then it conks out on me. However, this time - on the un-timed settings, the timer makes a humming noise when on the untimed settings, but doesn't work for a damn. On the timed setting, it doesn't move at all. This time I whipped out the volt meter and using some internet web pages as a guide, verified that the timer motor is in fact getting juice.
So before I try this third, and final timer I ordered from ebay - I was hoping you could help me out:
* Where is the in-line resistor located? Looking at the wiring diagram, that's the only thing I see that would cause this behavior as it steps down the voltage from 240v to 120v for the timer motor. What else could be going on here? I know it's possible I got two lemons in a row from ebay, but unlikely.
Thanks,
Bill
