Whirpool W10122576 Ice Maker So Unreliable!

My wife and I bought a Whirlpool WRS965CIAM 00 side-by-side fridge last year while we were doing some kitchen upgrades. We might probably have been pleased with this fridge except for the utterly unreliable ice maker that Whirlpool used in it. It simply stops making ice, and even the repair technician who they sent to look at it couldn't help at all.

I have taken it apart to see if there are any obvious problems, but none are visible except possibly one. The optics in the control board may be operating at less than 100%. If I disconnect and reconnect the plug that goes from the control board up to the filler valve, then the led on the control board will light up and show clear/blocked correctly.

After about 5-10 minutes, however, the led goes out and doesn't come back on unless that plug is disconnected and reconnected again. I don't know if there's a thermostat in the valve that is signaling the board not to light the led, but I suspect that somehow the valve is making the control board unhappy. Strangely, I have heard and seen the ice maker complete the harvest cycle and refill the ice maker tray even though the led on the optics is not lit.

There are a lot of complaints out there about this newer Whirlpool W10122576 ice maker, and I'm starting to wonder if the design is just a lemon? Anyone have any ideas about how to get this thing to work reliably? Why would the optics appear to work correctly for a few minutes after being disconnected and reconnected, but fail to light at all after that? Why would the ice make sometimes go ahead and make ice anyway?

I'm baffled, and I wish I hadn't bought this fridge.

Rick
