My GE Profile side-by-side has been cooling inconsistently on both sides - but more so on the freezer - for almost a year now. The temperature will rise to anywhere from 8 to 15 degrees on the freezer (setpoint at 0) and 40 to 48 on the fridge (setpoint at 37), much like it might do during its defrost cycle. The problem is, instead of just doing this for ~20 minutes, it stays at this temperature for several hours. I can also hear the fan running continuously during this time. A local repairman (I live in a very small town) replaced the defrost heater and thermometer. The problem persists. He is recommending that I replace the main control board. Can anyone tell me if this sounds like the correct solution? He says the board will cost ~$250, parts & labor. Is this a reasonable cost? Is this something I should consider doing myself? I'm not really into repairing appliances, but how hard could it be to pop in a new control board?
Thanks!
