Greetings! This is my first post in the forum, and like many new-comers - I come with problems.... I have a going on 13 year Kenmore washer that has given me no trouble, until now.
My wife [<-- notice I begin here, oh that was too easy ;-)] ran a load which in spin cycle started banging like all epic hell. I dismissed it at first because I noticed she had washed a sheet and some clothes wadded into a ball and I figured it was off-balance. On the next load, there was water on the floor after spin cycle but no loud noise. I removed the front lower panel to get some idea on the leaking water and I found a large fragment from the real tub shell that had completely broken free.
I would include a picture, but this image here is almost identical to my broken piece. Mine broke off in the upper left quadrant when looking at the tub from the rear.

I see another unlucky soul had the same problem here:

I have a few questions I hope I can get answered:
1. Does anyone know how this happened? I'm concerned there's something else wrong that if unfix, will only brake the tub shell again.
2. Also, with the replacement tub being 183 clams, and considerable brain surgery to boot, is this even worth it with a 13 year washer. It's my first washer so I have no idea what this model's life span is. All I know is my dear grandmother had her Kenmore for 30 plus year - yet my gut tells me they aint makin' them the same way they use to.
3. If I do go the fix it route, will I need to also need to order a new gasket that goes between the front and back tub halves?
4. And this is my 10 year old son's question - but I do love the bush-fix thinking of children - can't I just glue the damn thing back on and go have a beer?
All the best- Jeff
