Igniter Wires Burnt

Hi All:

I have a five year old Maytag Range. The Igniter burned out on me twice. The first time the wires leading to the igniter which came thru a hole in the metal made a dead short. I could see the lights in the house surge. I ran to the oven and turned it off and unplugged it. I had a tech come out and he said it was the igniter. He didn't have one in stock and couldn't get back to us for a few days so I ordered one on line and installed it. I put some oven insulation between the metal and the wires. It worked for about two or three years and now the oven won't light up again. I wasn't thinking and replaced the broiler igniter which was also bad. That works fine now. But my wife wants an oven to bake Christmas cookies.

The connector and the wires for the oven igniter are burnt badly. The plastic around the connector is all melted and burned black. The wires show signs of having burned. The oven insulation which was soft and pliable is now brittle and has cracked.

Obviously the heat is more then the wire can stand (and should have to stand). Should I try to track down the problem or is it too unsafe.

Thanks,

Charlie
