Frigidaire Gallery Series - Turns on by itself, backwards L on display, cannot run diagnostic tests

This machine had E47 a few years ago and I replaced the wax motor switch (mostly successfully -- I think I did not recess it enough so frequently the door lock triggers a pause). I mention this in case it is a contributing factor.

Machine yesterday suddenly developed problem when it would:

1. Turn itself on every few seconds when plugged in (and not otherwise engaged in a washing cycle). It beeps as if the Start button was pressed, but sometimes the display would show a backwards lower-case L. Every five seconds or so.

2. It *will* run a "normal" (but noisy) wash cycle but it will beep and discontinue every few moments. Somehow it does progress through the various fill and rinse and timer countdowns without a hitch, but no longer attempts high spin operation. It will remain stuck with the minute count as '1', endlessly beeping and power-cycling the display every 5 seconds or so. Of the seven segments on each LCD digit, the topmost horizontal one becomes illuminated in the center and then the leftmost digit is illuminated, then back to 1 again.

3. I tried some of the diagnostic/troubleshooting modes used for E47 testing. This involves pressing Option and Pause/Cancel and adjusting the washer cycle selection knob in fun ways. This never sets up properly with the blinking LEDs. Power cycling happens every few seconds on the board (see #1, above).

I suspect that I will be told to replace the control board. I will need some guidance on selecting the proper parts and the ensuing installation. I am not looking forward to moving this heavy beast so am hoping the work can be done mostly through the front panel.

Thanks in advance for your sage advice.

Ken
