Is it ok to leave water filter out?

I keep this fridge in my garage and we only use the ice for our ice chest (not drinking). I have a whole house water filter that I change regularly anyway.

My question is, should I leave the filter cartridge in it? Or can I safely remove it and leave it out? I would prefer the later.
