Have an old White Westinghouse refrigerator. I noticed yesterday that the fridge is not cold and the freezer is not freezing ice cubes as fast as normal. Today, problem persists. I've been reading online and have dusted off the coils on back of unit and am currently defrosting since there was ice built up on freezer back wall. I don't feel comfortable removing the back of entire unit, and even if I did, the back does not resemble anything I have seen described here or on other forums.
Is removing the back necessary to properly defrost the unit and to diagnose the problem?
The back is silver in color and I see four nuts/blts connecting the cols to it. There is a white tube in the center that runs down to underneath the fridge. The bottom of that tube has a hole and it empties into a black pan. There is no liquid in pan. There are other wires underneath that I don't recognize and a large black canister looking thing that is hot to the touch. Or it was when I first pulled unit from wall. Haven't checked it since.
